Exams update - July 2015

Welcome to your Exams update

I hope you've all had a successful summer series and are now looking forward to a well-deserved break. I know this exams series has had its challenges, and I would like to thank all schools and colleges for their co-operation.

For us and our exam markers we’re now busy preparing results, so we'll continue to process students’ papers and assessments ready for results day.

I do hope you've noticed a difference in the level of service you've received from the team in recent weeks. We've worked hard to make sure we have the right people in the right place.

We are now focusing on a review of the summer series and it's really important to us that we receive your feedback. Please do take a minute to fill in the survey in this update.

Nikki Bolshaw, Department Manager, Customer Service.

Enhanced Results Analysis (ERA) data levels

In summer 2014, we increased the level of ERA data we provide for a number of components. For operational reasons in summer 2015, we are reverting back to previous levels of data for a small number of these components. You will still receive ERA data, it will just be as provided prior to last summer. See a list of the affected components.

Summer 2015 certificates

Certificates will arrive in schools/colleges by 31 October. Please note we cannot issue a certificate for a student without the correct date of birth.

To ensure we have the correct information for your school/college before we send your certificates, please check the ‘Certificate name’ details found on the ‘Key information/Centre details’ page of e-AQA. If changes are needed, please contact us using the link on the page.

Retaining coursework/controlled assessment

A reminder that Ofqual requires samples of students' coursework and controlled assessment from each summer exams series.

The requirements for 2015 are listed on these notices for GCSE and A-level which can be shared with colleagues in your school/college.

  News roundup

Our Customer Services number has changed

We’ve changed our exams office support number to a new freephone number. The new customer services number is 0800 197 7162.

You’ll notice our contact number will also be changing on our website and, for a limited time, calls to the old 0844 number will automatically be diverted to the new number.

We’re committed to continuous improvement and Ofcom’s changes to UK call charges means that we’ve opted to move away from a charged service number so we can deliver a better service to you.

Entry fees 2015/16

Our overall aim is to keep our prices competitive, while taking account of the changes to the exam system which are leading to increased costs.

As previously, we have set higher fees in some subjects, for example those with comparatively low entry levels and/or high delivery costs. This approach helps us to offer schools and colleges as wide a choice of subjects as possible.
Find out more about our fees and indicative pricing for the new reformed GCSEs, AS and A-levels that will be taught from September 2015, with first assessment in 2017.

Intention to enter 2015/16

For the 2015/16 academic year and onwards, we will no longer ask schools and colleges for intention to enter information. As all entries are now submitted online, we have alternative methods for collecting this information.

If you accept private candidates in your school/college, you can still select the Entries/Intention to enter option on e-AQA to let us know.

Please note that to receive the early exam materials you will need, you must still submit estimated entries.

Autumn 2015 support meetings and training events

From the feedback you gave us in the spring, we’ve been looking at how we can best support you to better suit your needs.

In September, we’ll be out at locations across the country to receive your feedback on the summer series – and to let you know about our exciting new ways of supporting you.

We’ll provide further details in the September Exams update and on our support meetings pages with dates of our face to face meetings and also our virtual meetings.

For new exams officers, we’ve free training events taking place in October. Please look out for dates of these events on our website in the autumn term.

Celebrating and supporting the Secondary School of the Year 2015

On Friday 19 June we were proud to sponsor and present the Secondary School of the Year award to St Patrick's High School at the TES 2015 Schools awards 2015.

This award recognises the dedication and commitment of schools, so to celebrate this achievement and to support the great work, we gifted the winners a full-day of Continuous Professional Development and an annual subscription to Teachit, our online resources.

We didn’t forget the hard work of our shortlisted schools too who each received a one year departmental subscription to Teachit.

Want to enter your school next year? Register your interest and TES will let you know when entries are open.
